Cape CARES, a dedicated volunteer organization founded on the Cape in 1988, provides free medical and dental services to the people of Honduras. In its 27 years, Cape CARES’ volunteers have served over 123,000 people --- men, women, and children who would otherwise have no choice, but to go without care.

Our volunteer teams include dental, medical, pharmaceutical, and optical professionals, as well as translators and support personnel. Each team travels to one of our three clinics in southern Honduras and spends one week at that clinic. Because we believe that follow-up care is critical, each clinic “hosts” three teams in the course of a year. The people of Honduras come to us with various dental, medical, optometric, and chiropractic problems. The level of care we provide ranges from well-patient consultations to minor surgeries, similar to the care provided in a family practice. In addition to direct patient care, we provide community health and dental hygiene education.

In 1988, a team of 70 volunteers from Cape Cod traveled to Tela, Honduras, as participants of a humanitarian organization based in Texas. Shortly after this trip, the volunteers decided to form their own organization with Cape Cod as its base. That year, 4 teams of approximately 25 members per team traveled to the southern region of Honduras and visited several villages in this very poverty-stricken area.
In 1991, we adopted one community, San Jose de Pespire, in the department of Choluteca, and sent five teams into this region. Two years later, we began working with two additional communities, Los Encinitos and El Jicarito. Between 2000 and 2001, we added two new sites, San Marcos, in the department of Valle and close to the El Salvador border, and El Algodonal, near San Jose. Our ability to provide critical health care service was expanding to encompass a larger population and a broader geographical area. When it became evident that our services were no longer needed in El Algodonal, we searched for a new site. In 2014, we began sending teams to a clinic in Bertin Umanzor, just a couple of hours south of the capital city of Tegucigalpa. We now send nine teams to Honduras annually and we continue to enhance our services with additional efforts to implement preventive health care programs.
